This quartet was written in 1954 when the composer, Carlo Martelli, was a 19 year old student at the Royal College of Music. This publication is of a recent revision of the work. There are three distinct sets of ideas in the first movement which are freely developed, although vestiges of sonata form can be discerned. The second movement is a scherzo and trio, which is joined without a break to the slow third movement - an interesting feature of this conjunction, is that at the close of the slow movement ideas from the trio and then the scherzo return to round things off. The last movement is a succession of free variations on a theme in which the interval of a fourth predominates. For conservatories and professionals.

'Pixillation', composed by Mike Dale, is a melodic piece with many rhythmic and harmonic contrasts. After a short tranquil yet rhythmic introduction the first theme starts in a tango style, maintaining a rhythmic feel throughout. Although the tune at this time is clearly played by the soprano, the alto and tenor saxophones frequently interject with short counter melodies. The piece ends with a scattering of notes from the accompanying instruments with the soprano soaring over the top, before a gentle and quiet finish. 'Pixillation' received its premier at the Didsbury Arts Festival in September 2011, played by the Quagga Saxophone Quartet.

Starting out as a competition piece ‘Conversations’ by Shawn Meloy is a set of clarinet duets played as though the instruments are conversing. Elements of our own way of speaking are represented, from agreement to frustration, question and answer etc. At times beautiful, at others quite harsh, but in the end a fun, interesting and challenging new work for the versatile clarinet. For colleges, professionals and libraries.

Composed by Jonathan Merrett and written in an approachable modern idiom ‘Three Descant Recorder Pieces' is fun to play and easy to listen to. The first movement, 'Promenade', is a gentle walk in the countryside. The second piece, 'Song', is a lyrical melody that challenges the player to sustain the long lines of the tune. The finale, 'Swinging Along', is joyful and jazzy and is a lively counterpart to the other two movements. The piano accompaniment supports the soloist well, and is written in an accessible style for the teacher to accompany their pupil. Ideal for teaching studios, middle and secondary schools.

Carlo Martelli, the composer of this charming chef d'oeuvre, is himself a viola player and was inspired to compose the piece after playing through Dvorak's Terzetto for the same combination of instruments. For conservatories and professionals.
